116 Why is prayer necessary for a Christian?
116 Because it is the chief part of the thankfulness which God requires of us, 1 and because God will give his grace and Holy Spirit only to those who earnestly and without ceasing ask them of him and thank him for them. 2
117 What belongs to a prayer which pleases God and is heard by him?
117 First, that with heart-felt longing 1 we pray to the one true God only, 2 for all that he has commanded us to pray for. 3
117 Second, that we earnestly ask of the Lord 4 what he has promised in his Word. 5
117 Third, that we present our prayers with true faith, 6 so that we receive what he has promised. 7
118 What has God commanded us to pray for?
118 All things we need, 1 spiritually and physically, 2 as embraced in the prayer Christ our Lord himself taught us. 3
119 What is the prayer?
119 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. 1
