Day 46 • Question 120
120 Why has Christ commanded us to address God thus: 'Our Father'?
That immediately, at the very beginning of our prayer, he might arouse in us childlike reverence and trust toward God, 1 who is not to be approached with dread or terror, but with childlike confidence and love, as children approach an affectionate father. 2

Footnote 1
Jeremiah 31:9
With weeping they shall come, and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back, I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble, for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.
Matthew 6:9
"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Footnote 2
Matthew 7:9-11
Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
Luke 11:11-13
What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
